I grew up a mover. One early memory is of challenging myself to walk all the way down our hallway (30ish feet) in a handstand. My siblings and I were often found riding our bikes, climbing trees, and swimming. Once I hit middle school and started ballet lessons, I never looked back. I performed as a soloist with Ballet Northwest, taught ballet to children in Indiana while in college, and was introduced to the Gyrotonic® Expansion System by Rachel Friedman in my early 20s. I was fortunate to study Gyrotonic with an excellent teacher, Monica Benedette, while living in Rome, Italy. She is a ballet instructor now in Naples and was in Rome doing a masters thesis on using the Gyrotonic® Method to increase arabesque. The studio there was filled with professional dancers and we did all the advanced moves. This inspired me to become a Certified Instructor of the system myself. I completed my initial certification in 2019, Applications for Golfers in 2021, Pre- and Post-Natal training in 2023, and Applications for Dancers will be completed in January 2026. What I love about this system is that it really does feel like playing. You should walk away from the session feeling stretched, calmed and perhaps just a little sore.
